  • What Type of Internet Connection is Right for You?

There are two categories of internet connections: dial-up and broadband. Which one you choose for your business will ultimately depend on how fast your internet connection needs to be in order for your staff to use the internet efficiently.

If the company’s website is stored internally, speed of access will usually not be a problem.

If a company’s website is hosted by a separate ISP (Internet Service Provider), the speed of the connection to that particular ISP is extremely important. Slow speeds could lead to staff frustrations, as well as poor customer service. Where connection speed is a priority, a broadband connection should be considered for the business.

Broadband is a term for high-speed digital internet access for data, voice or video. It is an “always on” service, which means you don’t have to dial in every time you want to connect to the internet, and your phone line will not be tied up. Broadband is fast— generally 10 to 20 times faster than traditional dial- up modems.

The high speed of broadband gives you access to applications that were either not feasible with a dial- up connection or just too annoyingly slow. For example, broadband can:

    • Give you constant access to web pages.
    • Allow employees to telecommute, operating from their home or clients’ locations with the same speeds they would have if they were in the office.
    • Link several computers to the internet through the same connection.
    • Allow you to transfer large files of text or graphics at high speeds.

Investigate the advantages of broadband and what connection best suits the needs of your staff and your customers. Scam Warning

The FBI has issued warnings against an ongoing telephone scheme involving supposed jury service. Reports have been made across the United States including in the Midwest.

Officials say the scam artists identify themselves as U.S. court employees and are telephoning individuals to advise them that they have been selected for jury duty. In some cases they are told that they have missed jury duty and need to set an appointment for a future date. They then ask the individuals to verify their name and Social Security number before asking for their credit card numbers. If the request is refused, the individuals are often threatened with fines.

Authorities stress that the judicial system does not contact people by telephone and ask for personal information such as your Social Security number, date of birth or credit card numbers. Any time someone from the legal system calls you, it is always suggested you get a name and phone number of that person. Then, it is important to independently verify the number with the agency the person calling alleges he or she is with.

If you receive one of these phone calls, law enforcement officials stress that you should not provide any personal or confidential information. It is an attempt to steal or to use your identity to apply for credit or credit cards or other loans in your name. The main targets of these scams are often the elderly or uninformed. It is important to always be skeptical of anyone asking for personal information by telephone.

So far, many people have reported being contacted by people related to this scam. This scam, although not new, has gained greater usage in the last couple of months than in the past. If you have already been contacted and have given out your personal information, it is advised that you monitor your account statements and credit reports. If you believe you have been the victim of a scam or fraud, it is important that you contact your local authorities immediately.
