Tired of Email Spam? Call Big River Telephone.

The Big River Telephone spam filter, which was installed in February of 2004, now blocks eighty-eight percent of the mail that comes through their servers on a daily basis, according to Nathan Littlepage, Network Operations Manager for Big River Telephone.

“Although the filters do not catch all the spam generated, they are constantly learning and we are pleased with the volume of unwanted mail they do catch,” said Littlepage.

There are several message level classifications that are applied to email traffic on Big River’s network, such as regular (allowed), suspect items which are quarantined, ones that are blocked outright because they contain a virus, spam, and an invalid recipient email address.

Since it was installed two years ago, Big River’s spam filter has blocked almost 130 million of nearly 145 million messages it has received. Only twelve percent of messages received were actually allowed to be passed on to email recipients.

“Some people complain about receiving a lot of spam email messages, but you have to consider how many you’re not getting,” said Steve Maldonado, Product Development Manager of Big River Telephone. “The number of spam emails we receive on a daily basis is staggering.”
