| BAD BUGS: KEEPING COMPUTER VIRUSES AT
BAY |
 |
|
These days, news of computer viruses, worms, and other
digital mayhem is almost commonplace. What can you do to make
sure you're not a victim?
Don't open an email attachment that you don't recognize. A
majority of major virus attacks now spread through email,
pretending to be free software or even masquerade as someone
you know. If you don't know who is sending you a file, don't
open it. Even files from people you know may be dangerous. If
you receive an unexpected attachment from someone, send them a
note before opening it, to make sure the attachment is
genuine.
Keep your system updated. Microsoft is constantly updating
Windows. Be sure your computer is in tip- top shape by keeping
up with updates and patches. Visit
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ often to check for new
releases.
Install, and keep updated, a virus scanner. Having a
computer without a virus scanner is like having a house with
no locks on the doors. While virus scanners are available for
purchase, free ones are available online from Avast! Software
and from Grisoft/AVG Software. After installing your scanner,
scan your computer at least once a month and make sure that it
stays up to date. Most virus scanners currently can be set up
to update themselves.
With these three steps, you can be sure that your computer
will stay healthy and in great shape!
